How to Draw a Milkshake

If you’re in the mood for a sweet snack but can’t muster up the time (or energy) to go buy yourself a frozen treat, you can always whip up a quick drawing from the comfort of your home! It may not taste as good, but it’s an easy design that can have you feeling more cheerful in minutes.

In order to draw this cute, simple milkshake, you’ll need a clean sheet of paper, a pencil for sketching, a set of markers or colored pencils—we used markers for a brighter color. You’ll also need a good eraser, just in case!

Step #1

How to draw a milkshake step 1

Start by drawing a single horizontal line straight across. This horizontal line will serve as the mouth of your milkshake’s glass.

Step #2

Add in a vertical curve that’s weighted slightly towards the bottom in order to fill out the right side of the glass.

Step #3

Draw a second curved line on the left side, trying to match the curve of the right line as closely as possible.

Step #4

Draw a slightly curved line connecting the two sides of the glass, and then add the curved “legs” to this new line.

Step #5

Add two lines to define the seashell shape of the base and make them as wide or flat as you want them.

Step #6

Close off the glass’s base by adding a smaller, more squashed-looking bevel for the whole milkshake glass to rest its weight on.

Step #7

Add textured lines to emphasize the design and reflective quality of the glass itself. Try to keep things as symmetrical as possible!

Step #8

Sketch in a few more lines around the top of the glass. This will give your milkshake’s glass a beveled, old-fashioned design!

Step #9

Connect the bevels to the bottom of the glass. You may want to sketch these lines lightly to keep that glassy feel.

Step #10

Draw the base of the milkshake itself! Two nearly-flat curves on either side of the glass will show the milkshake’s relative weight.

Step #11

Add in more swirls. You can make your milkshake look even fancier by adding in a few extra layers of fluff!

Step #12

Finish the swirled ice cream part of your milkshake by creating a slightly curled peak that leans left and then points right.

Step #13

Add a cherry by drawing a rounded kidney bean shape behind the last swirl and then adding a stem that overlaps slightly.

Step #14

Add your straw! Draw two straight lines and then connect them by drawing an almost-flat oval at the end of the straw.

Step #15

Once you’ve got a design you like, outline it in either a black marker or with a heavier hand on the pencil.

Step #16

Color your straw. While we’ve chosen to use a red color for our straw, feel free to experiment with colors and patterns.

Step #17

Add some color to the cherry. If possible, try to color one side slightly darker than the other to show the highlights!

Step #18

Trace the inside of each milkshake line with an off-white or yellow color. Add a few vertically curved lines at the top.

Step #19

Outline the inside of your glass with a pink or red color. Leaving white space will emphasize the highlights on the glass.

Step #20

Fill in the blanks with a slightly darker yellow color to pick up the reflection of the milkshake through the reflective glass.

Step #21

Clean up any color bleeds or leftover pencil lines before you move on to the next step, since you’ll be switching colors!

Step #22

Use a blue color to fill in the edges of the glass’s base. This will create a reflective look, grounding your design.

Step #23

Using a pencil, draw an elongated oval beneath your base in order to get a feel for where the shadow will be.

Step #24

Fill the shadow in with a gray or black color. The shadow can be as light or as dark as you prefer.
